Poortgebouw Rotterdam

The Poortgebouw is an extraordinary nineteenth-century national monument located at the Kop van Zuid in Rotterdam, on the south bank of the River Maas. Built in 1879 as the office of the Rotterdamsche Handelsvereeniging, the building has played an important role in the city’s maritime and economic history. Over time, it housed organisations such as the Holland America Line, a meteorological station, and the Port of Rotterdam Authority.

Since 1984, the Poortgebouw has been home to a collective of approximately thirty residents — primarily artists, makers, and cultural workers — organised as an autonomous community association. Over the years, the building has developed into more than a residential collective. It has become a creative and social place within the city, hosting non-profit initiatives and public activities such as a vegan community kitchen, cultural events, and a give-away shop.

Today, the building faces major challenges. Due to decades of intensive use and limited financial resources, the monument is in need of substantial restoration and redevelopment. The challenge lies in finding a feasible future in which heritage preservation, affordability, collective living, and the social value of the Poortgebouw can continue to coexist.

Together with the new owner, governmental organisations, and Association Poortgebouw, we are working towards a sustainable and financially realistic future for the building — one in which the monument is restored, the current residents can remain, and the Poortgebouw continues to contribute to Rotterdam’s creative and social landscape.

My role: Initiator and project manager.
