New-Mathenesse is a business district located next to the city centre of Schiedam. The area has many qualities: it is situated along the water and has a strong identity shaped by its industrial history of distilleries and bottling facilities. Yet, due to its predominantly mono-functional character and industrial appearance, it is currently not experienced as a place to walk, stay, relax, or explore.
The recent departure of the glass factory has created opportunities for a new type of development, partly because environmental restrictions have disappeared. As a result, New-Mathenesse is expected to gradually transform into a more mixed and urban residential area in the coming years.
This transition also brings challenges. Many people are unfamiliar with this part of the city, and the area currently feels strongly car-oriented. There are concerns about social safety, spatial quality, and the lack of inviting public spaces. Limited activity on the streets and a lack of places to stay or meet reduce the overall sense of comfort and liveliness.
As placemaking manager, I work together with existing entrepreneurs, surrounding residents, and new initiatives to strengthen the identity and experience of the area. Through activities, temporary programming, greenery, wayfinding, and the creation of comfortable public spaces, I aim to support the transformation of New-Mathenesse into an accessible, attractive, and lively urban environment for both current and future users.
