Accessible and Livable Amsterdam

Amsterdam is undergoing a major urban transformation through large-scale restructuring and densification. By 2040, the city aims to realise 250,000 additional homes. Amsterdam South East will accommodate approximately 20% of this growth, with plans for around 51,000 new homes.

As a result, the number of residents in the area is expected to double — growing from approximately 100,000 to 200,000 inhabitants. At the same time, Amsterdam South East is already an important employment centre, with around 100,000 jobs and an expected addition of 33,000 new workplaces in the coming years.

This combination of residential growth, employment expansion, and the continued development of the area’s entertainment and event cluster creates a major challenge for mobility and liveability. Ensuring accessibility, connectivity, and quality of life requires an integrated and future-oriented mobility strategy.

Such a strategy includes station area development, public transport accessibility and timetables, the construction of new bicycle bridges and cycling infrastructure, wayfinding and signage, parking policy, logistical hubs, park-and-bike facilities, and collaboration with developers, employers, and local stakeholders. It also involves behavioural campaigns and smart mobility solutions that encourage sustainable travel choices.

Within this project, I support the programme manager in coordinating and developing the integrated mobility approach for Amsterdam South East.
